I think my experience with Dr McGee was extremely unfortunate for me. I am bipolar. It evolved over months but essentially after telling me he disagreed with my previous psychiatrist (who I saw for 20 years and was extremely grateful for) and he expressed complete surprise that there was one drug I hadn't tried. I was fairly stable when I started but complained of lethargy and he thought I could do better on this other drug. Long story short. I tried the new drug but it had some very unpleasant side effects, they were really bad but Doctor McGee kept encouraging me to stay on it. Finally I had two other doctors tell me straight up to stop taking it and I finally did. The unfortunate experience had to do with the fact that McGee had encouraged me to stop the medication I had been stable on so when I quit taking the one that was causing issues I was basically unmedicated. I began experiencing a lot of anxiety and mania. I felt like I was going to crawl out of my skin and my mind was just a mess, I asked to be admitted to a psychiatric hospital because I couldn't stand it. Fortunately, a very close friend picked me up and took me to their house and basically took care of me as I tried to get to some stability, through drugs I was given by McGee to mitigate the mania. At that point McGee told me he didn't know what to do. He never suggested that I should try taking the meds I was on before I started seeing him.

I now have a new psychiatrist and in one visit he said I should return to the meds I was on, that there was absolutely nothing wrong with what I had been taking. Lesson learned. I'm stable once again and I'm extremely disappointed in that whole fiasco with Dr McGee.

Dr. McGee is the best of the best. He truly cares about the well being of his patients and truly wants to see his patients succeed. I wish there were more doctors like him in this world because it would be a huge help in the fight against this opiate epidemic. If you're looking for a doctor who takes a vested interest in his patients and feels more like a friend than a doctor, then Dr. McGee is who you are looking for. I would recommend him 10/10 times.

He works with kindness and without judgement; his end goal is serenity for his patients, whatever they're struggling with. What I've appreciated is his availability between appointments, if I hit a rough spot. Dr. McGee's tool bag is extensive, filled with compassion, acceptance, thoughtful questioning, and - when needed - pharmaceuticals. He's gifted in his profession.

Dr. McGee has been in the San Luis Obispo area since last January. Working with him at a forensic psychiatric facility, I was immediately impressed with his friendliness, his impressive background, and his knowledge of psychiatry.
I sought his help for our son. Dr. McGee has amazed us with his ability to accurately diagnose our son when no one had been able to before. He has been responsible for a vast improvement. We are so thankful for his help.

He's been a spiritual advisor, mentor and all around voice of reason through the ups and downs of life and addiction. Dr. Michael McGee is an excellent psychiatrist. He has a very calm demeanor, professional, friendly, easy to talk to and provides good advise when called upon to do so. I felt very comfortable and safe discussing my personal life, and he helped me through my PTSD limitations, anxiety, depression, insomnia, and other symptoms that were caused from a recent house fire. Dr. McGee delved deep into areas of my life that were debilitating me, and creating co-morbidity symptoms that were appearing from the affects of the fire. I am grateful for the therapy that Dr. McGee provided which helped in educating me with better tools that has taught me how to cope with my symptoms. Even though I am not completely cured of my mental Health conditions to date, I have a better understanding of how to cope with my symptoms thanks to the therapy Dr. McGee provided during our sessions together.

Dr. McGee is very exceptional good psychiatrist ! He is friendly , patient and knowledgable. Since I see him, I have been able to sleep much better. I would recommend him to everybody!
