This VA is so bad I am gobsmacked by the incompetence and nonsense. They barely have availability for any consult less than 2 to 3 months out. I moved here from Texas and have on going treatment for various things which I can not go by without. I am so late for major treatments and they refuse to send me to the community leaving me with so much pain. I am in the process of speaking to Advocates on this matter. This place needs a total overhaul. I have been to different VA facilities in different states and this is by far the worse I have to deal with. I had an emergency and had to go to the ER was there for four hours and the medical residents who basically are students did nothing for me. I left the ER worse off than I came and all they did was a letter to go see my primary care which takes over a month to schedule. These people should not be in Healthcare let alone veteran care

For the past 9 years I've unfortunately witnessed the steep decline and inconsistency at this VA hospital. More so throughout the different areas on the second floor, ED, and imagery. I've watched veterans bleeding out in the ED waiting room on the floor and no one in the nurses station proactively providing care or moving the veteran to the back. I've waited 11 hours in the ED with a respiratory infection before they moved me to the back and then into imagery. I'm service connected for cervical strain and imagery just happen to miss the C6-C7 cervical problems causing nerve issues. Finally, a neurologist in Arizona with a different VA discovered it through an EMG. Besides Dr. Carly and a nurse Christian (they cover last names on badges), I've lost all confidence in the bulk of the staff throughout the 2nd floor. I'm sure Mike Medina is a nice person outside of work, unfortunately, he's getting to the point where he should consider stepping down or retiring. He's not competent or organized enough to handle the load his job demands and veterans are suffering as a result. There are a lot of logistics, coordination, scheduling, and miscellaneous tasks he's not able to satisfy or carry out.

The food is actually pretty good though, they outsource from a catering company and bring it in.

I have had many procedures done here and have been through every dept from cardiology to dermatology… most recent was a stent put in my LAD. Amazing experience, the team was extremely proficient and professional. I was actually very impressed how well everyone worked and communicated, very efficient. VA is an amazing benefit, those giving them poor reviews, just don’t appreciate what they have.

Considering ths price of medical care in this country. I would officially be dead and/or homeless if not for the VA.
Yes, this hospital is understaffed, often rude, sometimes scary, and a painful, traumatic, dangerous experience (a lot like living in America without being born into wealth). However, I would be dead without the care, and it cost me $0, other than the years of brutal, harsh treatment on the high seas. Living in America as a "poor" is an absolute hell I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. But at least the VA is a thing, let's hope Trump doesn't take it all away.

Went to the ER for my wife who was having a severe allergic reaction. I was told to sit in the ER with literally no one there. I wanted 10 mins while the one nurse on the phone finished her phone call with 3 other nurses sitting around on their computers. All the while my wife’s throat began to swell all to be told by the most Karen of Karen’s that they could not see my wife because they only see Veterans, and I’m like I don’t care just help her. She said why don’t you take her somewhere else. She had no regard for my wife, and honestly I am pursuing legal action against the Va for their failure to help. We had to then drive another 15 minutes to another hospital that gave her the treatment she needed. Shame on the VA shame on that nurse. I will never ever return to that clown show.

Terrible experiences, lack of care, treatment, sympathy. Under qualified personnel and too many student doctors. Go elsewhere if you care about your mental and physical health. Very unfortunate how the VA treats veterans

The care has declined significantly since many clinics in the medical center are now staffed with Residents from UCSD. Not staff doctors, not a board certified doctor, but a resident in training. They may have a staff doctor in that department, but good luck seeing them. The thing is, we are the patients. Without us they would not have a job. Maybe they should learn to respect the patient more. Not let them wait in an exam room for 45 minutes without even saying, I'm sorry we are running late? Now that's a thought. But here is one better, are Veterans so not valued that we are to have procedures done by a baby doctor in training with minimal experience? Shame on the VA in La Jolla, California.
