Dr. Reckart was my psychiatrist in Tucson from about 2001 to 2009. I had no problems with her or the medications she prescribed for years, until 2008 when she took me off of my Celexa and switched me to Prozac. Typically when you switch medications, your doctor will do what’s called a cross-titrate. Instead, Dr. Reckart discontinued the Celexa completely and started Prozac. Typically this process should take a month or more to complete. She did it in one day.

I have spoken to two psychiatrists since who confirmed how irresponsible that was. I suffered for months with the worst panic attacks I have ever or would ever experience. I felt like I was losing control of my mind and would never be myself again. I called Dr. Reckart to communicate my distress and she simply increased my Prozac, which worsened the anxiety (as I learned later from a Psych professor, Prozac can have an agitating side effect).

I share this because I never want anybody to go through what I went through. It took so many months for me to be back to myself, and in those months so much misery because I didn’t know if my brain would ever heal. I do not believe Dr Reckart was intending to cause harm, but I do believe she was very careless about something which should not be complicated, and required very little clinical judgment on her part. This should have been a textbook med change.

For the record I absolutely believe in psychiatry. I see a psychiatrist today and probably always will. It is a significant part of caring for my mental health. I respect the field and I work in the field. That is why it is important to me to share this. Psychiatrists have to know the consequences of careless med changes and the importance of the standard of practice.
