I WISH I COULD GIVE this a ZEROOOOO RATING. This Halifax is very unprofessional and rude, this was my second time coming here just to still not be seen. Sat in the room for 3 hrs with an iv in my arm and no tests taken. The receptionist were also laughing at someone who seemed to be mentally challenged and that is very unacceptable as they are supposed to be people who care for us. They were also on their phones, giggling, and when I asked how long it would be they said in a stern nonchalant way âthe rooms are full, sit down and waitâ. Is this what a hospital is about? That 7-11 shift needs to be replaced immediately. The ratings will continue to deteriorate due to staff and efficiency!

My mother has been in the ER, brought in unconscious via ambulance, since Sunday Feb 2, 2025 around 1030AM and as of 9PM Feb 3, has not had a single visit to her room by a Dr. I have made multiple requests of nursing staff while on site at the facility to share test and ultrasound results only to be told they don't have time because of other incoming patients. My siblings have made multiple calls to the ER nurses desk over the past 12hrs requesting a return call from a Dr to discuss test results and the status of my mother's care, and no calls have been returned. Halifax Health website lists core values, mission and vision that paint a picture of clean facilities, the highest quality staff, and superior quality of service, but in the past 2 days of my experience, they are not even meeting a substandard level of care.

This review is for the Labor & Delivery section of the hospital. If you just want the quick summary itâs 100% Have your baby here, the staff was beyond incredible!
1. Aletha our night nurse might be the most incredible human being on the planet. We had a really long delivery; 39 hour induction including over 25 hours of active labor. As you can imagine my poor wife was exhausted. I know Aletha had to have other patients as well, but somehow it always felt like she was there every single second we needed anything. Even more amazing on the 2nd night Alethaâs 12 hour shift was supposed to end at 7 am while we were about 36 hours in. Iâm still not sure exactly how Aletha knew but she just seemed to know my wife and I were hoping she would be able to stay, and sure enough Aletha worked 15 hours straight to stay with us through the birth of our son. That extra 3 hours meant my wife got to be that much more comfortable having this amazing person helping to deliver our son, and we will be forever grateful we had this phenomenal nurse to help us through.
2. Sarah (our day nurse)- Have you ever met someone where itâs simply impossible to talk to them without smiling and feeling happy? Sarah is this exact person. Picture just a ball of good energy. Whether it was a joke, a story, a smile or just anything to make my wife feel better Sarah was perfect for it. All while handling all her patients and duties. Exactly what you need when going through labor. People like here are one more reason to choose Halifax.
3. Kaylee- Another day nurse we had the pleasure of having. Kaylee managed to combine a no nonsense attitude get the job done while making it clear she genuinely cared about us. Her leadership was very calming and you just knew instantly you are in good hands when sheâs around. She answered so many questions from us and again made us feel comfortable in a stressful time.
4. Kendal- Kendal was a nurse from another department moving over to labor and delivery. She has 3 kids of her own and multiple times she was able to give advice, answer a question, reassure us about difficulties etc etc. She was kind and friendly and someday there will be another new mom who gets reassured by Nurse Kendal
Moving to our general experience. Right of the bat Halifax is the only Level 3 NICU in the area. They also offer tours on Tuesday afternoons before you deliver just so you can see everywhere you will be going, fill out paperwork ahead of time and just be a little more comfortable. Another thing we appreciated after we got admitted they let us know they had training nurses (as all hospitals do) who may want to watch the delivery but that our comfort was paramount and if we didnât want any extra people in the room none of them had to come. We wanted to at least try and help a little and agreed to having one training nurse observe who wound up being a lovely girl named Trinity. She was really sweet, eager to learn and be helpful. I imagine training under these amazing Halifax nurses Trinity will someday make another set of parents have a great delivery experience. One more just perfect example of how much these Halifax nurses care. As mentioned our labor was quite extended and my wife had been stuck at 4cm for hours. Every other person who had come in around the same time as us had already had their babies. Aletha came in to give my wife another check and when she came up smiling we knew we had finally progressed. Aletha entered in we were 9cm (baby almost ready to come) in the computer and about 5 seconds later we heard the entire floor of nurses cheer. Turns out they had all been checking on us on their external monitors for hours rooting for us. It felt fantastic to literally be able to hear people caring that much.
In summary I understand there might be a newer or prettier hospital somewhere, but I am beyond certain you will not find a safer, more comforting experience for delivery with people who genuinely care about you than Halifax Health Labor Delivery.

December 1, 2024, my partner and I had an upsetting encounter with a head nurse at Halifax. My partner, who has been no-contact with his family for three years due to trauma, received news that his grandmother was hospitalized. We werenât given any information about her condition or the situation and wanted to approach the visit with care.
Upon arriving, I explained the situation to the head nurse and requested an update before walking into a room full of family members with whom my partner has no contact. Despite providing the requested PIN, I was told we still couldnât receive any information. We tried to follow her direction to speak to the nurse in the room, but when we waited outside to avoid potential interaction with family, the head nurse became stern and dismissive.
She walked in to the room, asked whether or not they needed to âchange the PINâ and came back out saying, âyour grandmother wants to see you! Just go in!â
Repeatedly, I explained the sensitive family dynamics and our reasons for caution. Instead of listening or showing empathy, the head nurse pressured my partner to âput it all asideâ and see his family, disregarding the trauma that had caused the no-contact in the first place. Her lack of patience, compassion, and willingness to understand our perspective was deeply disappointing.
This situation highlights a serious need for training in how to handle family dynamics sensitively, especially for individuals who may have a history of abuse or trauma. It is not the role of a nurse to push someone into a decision theyâre not ready to make, especially in such emotionally complex circumstances.
I urge the hospital administration to ensure their staff are trained in trauma-informed care and communication. Every patient and family deserves respect and understanding, no matter their history.

Literally the worst hospital experience ever! We were there from out of town. The lady working checking people in was too busy talking, telling stories, snacking and scrolling on the computer with co workers to do her job. Triage worked people in quick. The nurses and PA were just sitting around chatting loudly enough you could hear every word they were saying in the little bays about every personâs diagnosis and how they felt about if someone was truly ill or not. They seem to try to just push people out the door kept saying my husband just had anxiety and didnât wanna run any tests. Finally decided to run some and came back hours later saying they need to pull for them again because they lost the first ones and they never made it to the lab. Absolutely would not go back there! They also seem to have an over abundance of homeless people that sleep in the lobby area of the ER as when we finally got to go back after waiting in the lobby for 4-5 hours they were sending security to have them finally leave.

I took my 90 year old father to Halifax Hospital today with confusion, shortness of breath and blue lips. He has an extensive cardiac history. We arrived at 11:15 am. He was in a wheelchair due to his inability to walk long distances and he didnât have his walker with him and was very short of breath. We were called to triage fairly quickly, the did an initial assessment and then took his blood and an ekg. We were then told that they were very busy so we would need to go back into the waiting room and wait for a bed to open up. So we did, and we waited and waited and waited. I asked a few times when we may get in and was told the same every time. We have no beds. I am not exaggerating when I say it was absolutely frigid in the waiting room. It had to be 40 degrees, we and everyone else were shivering. Needless to say, they would not give me the results of the tests or even tell me if there was a problem. With neuropathy in his feet it became extremely painful for him to continue to sit in that tiny wheel chair. It was now 6 pm, we had waited for over 6 hours. I asked again can you please tell me if his condition warrants the pain he was in sitting in the chair dealing with the neuropathy. The nurse said no, sorry she couldnât. My dad finally said enough is enough and told them we were leaving. What kind of a facility has a 90 year old sick man sit for almost 7 hours? I logged onto his test results and they are definitely not normal and warrant medical attention right away. We will be heading to Advent ER and will not be back to Halifax. The staff could care less about the patients in the ER, they congregate and talk the majority of the time. When I explained out situation the nurse said leave if you want to, you will be leaving against medical advice but whatever. They have 0 compassion! I rarely write reviews, I would highly recommend finding another ER if at all possible.

0 star rating. I would not send my worst enemy here if you have to stay. The nurses smile and are nice to you but if your trapped in a room and cannot leave you could possibly die. You hit the button it better not be important. In my 11 day stay the quickest anyone answered the button was 20 minutes. The nurse with their smiles would see what you need just to turn off red light and disappear for another hour or two.Forget needing ice or water because they do. Always oh I forgot. Meds you better call in advance by an hour because still have wait once you ask 2 hours pass dosing time. Best yet they all work 7 to 7 so best comment asking for things at 6 was you will have to wait until next shift comes on!!! That's a joke I didn't once see next shift until 8:30. That's just vitals anyway 6 times a day which have not changed once in 11 days. Robe the insurance company for that money. Didn't list am or pm because same for both. Do not get put on equipment they do not use often because they have no clue when it breaks. Had to call specialist which cannot come out until next day but it will be OK. Life saving device. 5 days being there still can't ultimately tell me what's wrong but when I left one med for 6 weeks and another for a year. All while in the hospital throw all the different most expensive meds on the market and seeing which one sticks. If you read this and you had a good experience here the you are blessed. Just to say stopped Halifax and went to Advent. Much better experience.

Front staff when we went was not friendly and not caring of my mom health issue. The security guy was very nice and helpful tho. We waited in the ER lobby for 4 hours and the whole time she had trouble breathing and they took people in that came in after us that only had cold symptoms. I would understand if they had more issues so they needed to be seen but she was having trouble breathing to leave her in the waiting lobby 4 hours is not ok. When I told them she needs help and atleast a breathing treatment because not being able to breathe is horrible and that i seen others going in before her the staff said thats because they have different issues so they are going to different areas of the hospital and they still would do nothing for her. I ended up going to adventhealth who was just as busy but due to her condition/age they took her in right away and staff there was so caring of her and how she was feeling. Never again will I trust Halifax with my mom nor will I allow anyone I know to go there and be treated with such little care in a time of need.
