I’ve spoken with multiple for-profit treatment centers, and every single one was willing to waive my out-of-pocket costs while gladly accepting tens of thousands of dollars from my insurance.

Charis House, however, is legally registered as a nonprofit and receives donations—yet their idea of "helping" me was to pressure me into taking out a loan. They gave me just a few hours to figure out financing or lose my chance at treatment, despite waiting months on their waitlist.

This is not how a true nonprofit or a compassionate treatment center operates. If you are considering donating to Charis House, please reconsider. Given how they treat those in need, one has to wonder where those donations are really going.

I was here earlier this year (2024) and my stay helped me through part of my recovery but I found the overall experience to not be nearly what I had hoped.

One of the hardest things was watching one resident who had a deep struggle with ED be forced to stay up multiple nights in a row because she couldn't finish her meals for the day. She was also forced to take a shower at some point and was immediately returned to the table. Eventually, she was sent back to her family somewhat abruptly because she was too hard of a case for BYB to accommodate. She was also somehow able to self-harm one morning (even though she should have been monitored at the time) and I noticed her hands were raw with scratches on them. She was made to wear latex gloves after this.

All I know is what I experienced. I didn't find it to be a personally healing experience or to live up to initial expectations. I will say, a highlight of my stay was counseling with Shane Johns, as he was one of the best counselors I've ever seen.

I've battled anorexia for ten years. At times, I've appeared to be fine from the outside, all the while internally struggling and thinking there was no hope for a life outside of the ED.

In desperation, I Googled for Christian eating disorder support this last fall. Working with my therapist and dietitian was helpful, but I longed for community and hadn't found anything in my area. I began attending the BYB virtual support group. Approaching marriage, I was feeling the stressors of major life change and even navigating the ED with my now-husband. BYB (and Amie specifically) has been nothing short of a miracle in my life...

I have now stepped out in faith and attended the BYB Supporters & Strugglers retreat and the BYB intensive just last week. Here's the thing: I'm not spontaneous--I was a teenager before I even went to a sleep-away camp for the first time. But God gripped me through BYB's ministry and Amie's love and support made it easier to trust God when He told me: Go!

I firmly believe that God has used the BYB support group, events, and community I've gained have to save my life and my marriage (we're five months in and we're fighting the ED and satan TOGETHER now).

If you need help or know a lady in your life who does, I encourage you to get involved with BYB. The humble, godly love is unlike anything I've ever experienced in treatment. Amie has recovered and she knows what the struggle is like. She also is a beacon of light that God is using to spur me on, to remind me that I can recover. And by His strength, I WILL.
