The Baxter regional hospital is generally a well run hospital but their outpatient surgical center is anything but well run. We have had two experiences with this organization. The first instance was my wife's rotator cuff surgery in February. She has a heart condition and was given an EKG prior to surgery. The nurses were told to repeat the EKG after surgery. This was not done. I was called back to the recovery room soon after the surgery was completed. My wife was clearlly groggy from the anesthesia. They immediately started dressing her and told me to get the car. She was barely able to get into the wheelchair. They then wheeled her out to the car and if I had not been there, she would have fallen when trying to get into the car. She was clearly not ready to be discharged. We were rushed out of the surgery center so fast that we did not even get to talk to the doctor.

The second issue is a fluoroscope of my shoulder scheduled for tomorrow. They have called 3 days in a row to go over the procedures that I should follow on the day of the xray. They cannot understand that I am not having surgery. All three days they have insisted that I have a driver and they say I should fast after midnight. Each day I have told them that I am not having surgery and I will not have any anesthesia. Each day I have convinced them that I am basically having xrays only. Then the next day, they call again, convinces that I am having surgery.

These people are not managed well and the director should be held accountable.

When walking in, it feels a bit nauseating with the massive size of the entrance and waiting rooms. After the initial overwhelming feeling subsides, you are greeted by a smiling employee explaining basics ( snacks, restrooms, check-in counter, etc ). The registration clerks are easy to speak with and leave you feeling comfortable. When brought into the pre surgical area, the nurses are kind while prepping you. Knowledgeable doctors explain every step of your surgery while your surgical doctor comes to ease your mind and answer any last questions you may have. Even though the recovery room is peaceful, it feels like they are trying to get you out as soon as they can after you wake up.

The staff is wonderful, but the entrance is confusing as it says EXIT over the entry door. Then you have to wind your way around thru several doors to find the reception desk. I hope they improve the signage at the entrance! And PLEASE place a couple of benches out front. I had to leave my 89 year old friend standing by the door after her procedure while I ran for the car.

Excellent people and facility. My procedure was fairly complex, incisionless but full anesthesia. The prep crew was excellent. The OR team was impressively professional. Well-practiced team. No traveling nurses. Surgeon was outstanding. Anesthesiologist was too. New, modern equipment. This should be the standard of care everywhere. Sadly I'm sure it is not. People in Baxter county are fortunate.
