I was very impressed with the rep I spoke with. She made it seem they could really help me. Im a 64 yo paraplegic and afraid to drive in Jax traffic with my hand controls.. I have not heard back from them, and I’ve called several times but only get an automated response to leave a message. Hosea LOST my application or maybe he never received it! It’s pathetic when an agency that’s supposed to help people is so inept. I visited the office, and the receptionist was very unfriendly and my brother and I were sent on a wild goose chase trying to find the directions they gave us. The pictures are so misleading. They look so Care so much, but certainly not in my case.

CIL provided good service, and I had been a member since ILRC changed to CIL in August 2015—nearly nine years with no issues. I loved the staff because they had heart and supported advocates. I also volunteered a few times to support the Deaf community and CIL staff. CIL felt like home to me. The staff made me feel comfortable, like family, both with the staff and other clients. They always advocated for those struggling in different situations. However, things started to change around October 2023 due to personal conflicts among staff. By December 2023, my insurance got messed up, and my job stopped providing an interpreter. I needed an advocate to help with my insurance and interpreter access, but my case was left behind. This led to growing frustration and deep emotional pain. Over the next few months, things got worse. Staff, clients, and I had conflicts, especially on social media, involving members of the Deaf community. Many of us turned to CIL for support, hoping the staff would resolve the issues, but instead, everything became a bigger mess. CIL staff did nothing to stop the situation. The tension between staff, clients, and me became so serious that we tried to arrange a meeting, but staff avoided us. In the end, I was banned in March 2024. Later, I learned that CIL had banned not only me but also several interpreters and other Deaf community members, leaving fewer clients and creating even more issues. This is a serious situation that needs to be addressed. (I acknowledge that we had a meeting where I expressed anger and made threats, but I also apologized. Unfortunately, the staff and board did not accept my apology. I was shocked that they didn’t offer me a warning or a second chance.) Before I was banned, CIL told me, “We are not mental health professionals.” However, they overlooked the fact that I was struggling with mental health issues and needed help. I needed access to insurance and resources, but they told me to find another resource. Many hospitals, police officers, and even Google kept directing me back to CIL as the most well-known resource. In my opinion, they should not have banned me. Deaf individuals need access to insurance, ADA rights, interpreters, and advocates. Because of CIL’s actions, I was left without insurance support and interpreter access, which took a toll on my mental health. I have been without necessary medication for over a year. I don’t accept how they judged my behavior without understanding that I was screaming for help with my insurance and interpreter access. Staff should be advocating for and supporting their clients, not turning them away. CIL banned me without considering the serious impact on my well-being. My counselor tried to help, but CIL refused to take action. Even my counselor disagreed with their decision, believing it was wrong to ban Deaf individuals from essential resources. Deaf people must have access to the support they need, and advocacy should not stop. (They did provide short-term help with food for Thanksgiving in November 2024, which I appreciated and felt blessed to receive.) Tyler, the boss, is a wonderful man, but I want him and the staff to rethink their decisions—not just for me, but for other clients as well.Thankfully, I finally found a job in December 2024, but I still appreciate the Thanksgiving food assistance.
(As of December 2024, I’ve heard that Deaf community events at CIL have decreased, and people have said they feel bored. I wish you the best in fixing this situation, CIL. Thank you.)

Deaf community,

I asked Monique for help finding an attorney and requesting an interpreter. She initially agreed to help me, but after two months, I emailed her multiple times with no response. I also called the CIL office to speak with her boss, but my voicemails went unanswered.

Thankfully, a former ex CIL employee provided me with a list of attorneys, which I greatly appreciate her from ex CIL employee. The lack of response from CIL is very disappointing and shameful.

This version is more concise and clear, making it easier for others to understand your situation.

Well they seemed great at first.
I contacted them and came in for an appointment because I was homeless and couldn't keep a job due to disabilities. I really needed help getting on my feet.
They put me in a hotel for one week after helping me apply for an emergency housing voucher. After getting the voucher I met with them again and was told their services are mostly for elderly disabled people(should have said that in the first place) and I was also referred to an apartment complex nearby that didn't even allow children to live there. They knew I had a child with me that needed housing too.

The only places available to move into right away with the voucher were moldy and roach infested. Toxic black mold illness is part of the reason I have a hard time working so moving into a place that's moldy wasn't an option unless I wanted to go to the grave.

If you have to be elderly to get real help from them then they need to make some age restrictions so that they don't lead on younger disabled people.
