I had to bring my 15-year-old son in for lab work this morning at the UF Health Nocatee lab, and I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Lindsey. A bit of background: my son has autism and severe anxiety (imagine the worst-case scenario and multiply it by five or ten). He typically passes out or throws up when getting blood drawn, so my husband and I were prepared for the worst. We informed the lab in advance so they weren’t caught off guard, and Lindsey was incredibly prepared, calm, and reassuring. She made sure everything was set up before calling him back and worked quickly to get the draw done.

What impressed me even more was what she did afterward. Not surprisingly, he became clammy, turned a bit greenish-gray, and felt sick to his stomach. While we waited for him to recover, she offered us some great advice on how we can better prepare for future lab visits to ensure he has an even smoother experience. Suggestions like bringing an ice pack, snacks or a drink with caffeine and sugar, and a change of clothes were simple, but things we never would have thought of, and things no other lab had taken the time to suggest before. It was clear that she only had his best interests at heart and wanted to make future lab visits as easy on him as possible.

This was our first time having his lab work done at UF Health Nocatee, and now we won’t be taking him anywhere else.
