AUGUST 2024 UPDATE:

Avoid at All Costs

Humana has been nothing but a frustrating and inconsistent experience. Every time I call, I’m either bounced between multiple departments or hung up on entirely. I’ve spent hours on the phone just trying to connect with someone who can help, and when I finally do, the service quality is all over the place. Some representatives are helpful, while others are utterly useless.

One of the most frustrating aspects of having Humana’s DHMO plan is the lack of choice when it comes to dental offices. If you’re in the Bay Area, you’re essentially stuck with Western Dental, which also has to provide Medi-Cal dentistry for all of Alameda County. This means you’re forced into a dental system that may not meet your standards of quality and care. I had no choice in the matter, and that’s incredibly frustrating.

To make matters worse, just this week I received a text from Humana saying I’d been assigned to a dentist that isn’t even Western Dental. This is baffling because I’m currently with Western Dental. Humana’s own system can’t even keep track of who my dentist is, which caused a three-month delay from the time I first wanted to book an appointment to when I was finally able to see a dentist. This wasn’t my dentist’s fault at all—it was 100% due to Humana’s incompetence.

Humana’s ineptitude also directly impacts your care. For example, during a visit to Western Dental, Humana’s rep first claimed I wasn’t assigned to that office, only to later confirm that I was. This kind of ineptitude causes real hardships and is completely unacceptable.

That said, I’ve actually had a better experience with Western Dental than with Humana—but that isn’t saying much. My DHMO plan with Humana is a joke. I end up paying out of pocket more than expected, and the benefits hardly justify the hassle. Next year, I’ll likely skip insurance entirely rather than deal with Humana’s mess again.

JULY 2024:

I had a highly frustrating experience with my dental insurance today:

After contacting about five different dentists to find one that accepted my insurance, I finally located a provider in the next town over. They assured me everything was in order. I scheduled an appointment weeks in advance for this morning, only to be informed by the receptionist upon arrival that my DHMO plan automatically assigns me a specific dentist that I must use. Why wasn’t I informed of this before traveling and arriving for my cleaning?

I’m seriously considering canceling my dental insurance, as dealing with out-of-pocket expenses might be simpler.

This experience was incredibly frustrating, highlighting issues within the current system.

I MADE A HUGE MISTAKE GOING WITH HUMANA.
I suggest you DO NOT go with Humana. I have been met with NOTHING but incompetence. This company is, in my opinion, fraudulant. You will NOT find an MD, you will find just DO's. I amde a huge mistake, and I cannot rectify it at this time in the program.
