WARNING: HIGH COST FOR 1ST VISIT!
I scheduled an appointment for my annual physical which is completely covered by my insurance. Since it was my first visit at Jasemine D Mistry, they now want to charge over 700$ for this preventive measure. Nothing about this has been communicated on my visit though. Would have been good to know, because then I would have chosen a different doctor. On The doctors notes it even states that I wanted to have a physical exam and now they tell me that my physical has not been completed. It also states that I don't have any complaints and just want to have my physical to labs done.
Please get this issue sorted. This is not a good experience for a doctors visit
🙁

I just tried to get lab work done for a procedure 7 days from today and was told the earliest i could get lab work is 20 days from today. FOR A BLOOD DRAW.

Now months later i go to drop off a fecal test sample, that was already labeled by UCLA, AND THEY REFUSED TO TAKE IT.

Dr Whelan is an AMAZING physician and the only reason I would put up with the ucla medical health system. Dealing first with the Montecito location and now the Ventura one, the level of incompetence and inefficiency in this system is mind boggling. They make it absolutely impossible for you to speak to do your doctor even through the online messaging system. I am always told my request for medications, blood work, etc, will be passed on to my doctor and they NEVER ARE. It takes attempt after attempt to get anything done or responded to. Last week after my sti blood work, so I had to call 4 times to get them to reach out to Dr Whelan to release my results. Dr Whelan, you’re amazing but please start your own practice and leave this hell hole of a medical facility.

I'd love to rate this higher, as my doctor is fantastic, but the billing staff seem almost criminal in their lack of transpancy. For my first visit, i was billed more than 1100 (700 something after insurance) for a routine intake and 5 minutes with an ultra sound to confirm a cyst. I was told this was a level 4 office visit. Ok what ever, seemed high, but i agreed to the diagnostic test. A few months later, I stopped in a second time to have a spot checked out. I Spent maybe 15 minutes with the doctor, no procedures, or anything else, just a routine discussion and 2 minute exam. This was billed as a level 3 office visit at 508 to insurance and 270 OUT of pocket. I tried reaching customer service to get clarity about what office visit levels entail and was told E "Bills are non- negotiable, take it up with front desk or doctor for future visits if you want to minimize excess charges." All i wanted to know is what metrics they base their charge leves on. Instead I was blown off and told to pay and go pound sand.

Update: Was finally able to get clear metrics on bill level. Very expensive, but the best primary care I've received in the county. -1 star for poor cs in billing.

Dr Whelan is the best GP I have had in decades. My initial consultation with him was impressive. He did an extremely thorough exam , asked relevant questions and scheduled a follow up.to review test results. In 2021 I suffered from vague symptoms that were not easy to diagnose. His persistence and his diligence paid off. He initiated a series of test/referrals that culminated in the creation of a UCLA team of specialists that saved my life. My husband was so impressed that he switched to Dr Whelan and is confident in the care he now receives . 5 stars

Beware of excessive price gouging here. My total bill for a brief appointment was over $1,056. I saw a doctor for a first-time 10 minute appointment to ask him about statins. The doctor went through my numbers quickly and recommended statins. The next thing I knew, I am getting a $1,000+ bill in the mail. When I contacted UCLA Health, they told me they'd review it and contact me within 3 days. When over a week passed, nobody contacted me. I reached out again. They told me my appeal was denied without any further explanation. I know medical care is getting more expensive, but UCLA Health's pricing doesn't seem ethical.

Additional note: Readers might be intersted to know that I left this same review on Yelp over a month ago in March. Kimberly E. from UCLA Health wrote on my Yelp review that they would like to personallly discuss my bill. Similarly to my first effort to discuss bill with someone, no one has reached out to me.

They pretend with the follow up notes that they care, but this is window dressing so when others looking at these reviews might think that UCLA Health makes an effort to resolve issues. Not at all.

Mixed bag of quality. Some are good. A lady I had was okay. Some I wouldn't trust to diagnose a sneeze though. The first doctor I went to visit, I asked for blood work because I was going to adjust my diet and life style and was trying to get a base line. He told me that it would be pointless and just a waist of time and money. Then I had their dermatologist in Thousand Oaks look at a mole and was like I'm a little worried it's been growing and he was like. Well it looks like dry skin to me and will probably go away in a few weeks. ... Nope 1.5 years later still there, and bigger. Charged me like $600 too.
